With good weather and a good group of volunteers, Chinatown Museum Foundation enjoyed another successful event this past Sunday, 7/20 at the Chinatown Summer Fest. As with all successful events, it takes a great deal of preparation, time, and hard work by everyone. We are thankful for a great team of dedicated volunteers.
Early in the morning, Howard & Grace, Ian & Sheila, and Ram & Soo Lon helped set up the booth for business at the great location of Wentworth & 23rd Street. Maria & Billy worked very hard at writing Chinese names in beautiful calligraphy for the visitors. We were lucky that Mr. Wong was able to help with that task too. We collected a total of $225 in donations.
Ram, Joe, and Telly helped with finding the correct Chinese characters for the names while Grace, Sheila and Ian passed out gift coupons for the Museum. Drinks, snacks, and goodies were provided by Grace, Malcolm and Soo Lon. Ruth Moy, Matt and Dr. Tee joined the group for a few hours of fun too. David dropped by to say hi. Around 5pm, the Chuns, Moys, Joe and Mal closed up shop and took everything back to the Museum and called it a day.
It was a fun but long and tiring day for everyone. But the important point is that we were able to get more publicity and exposure for CMF & CAMOC.
On Saturday, Grace organized the staff and two high school volunteers on to put CMF labels on fans, back scratchers and chop sticks as gifts when the visitors redeem the gift coupon they received from the CMF booth. We thank Ian for the idea of coupon redemption to increase traffic flow to the Museum. Big thanks goes to Telly for printing out over a thousand labels for us to put on the free gifts. Telly, sorry for the rush job and we're grateful that you always come through for us! Telly, Soo Lon, Grace and Andrea also worked on the coupons for distribution.
Kudos to all the volunteers and staff who helped make this event successful. On to the next fun event, Dragon Boat Race at Ping Tom Park, this Saturday, 7/26!!! Hope to see everyone there! Go, CMF Team, Go!

"Duan Wu Jie" or Dragon Boat Festival –
Duan Wu Jie (meaning Day of Right Mid-Day) or Dragon Boat Festival
is celebrated every May 5th in China. This festival dates back to early
China. A popular legend going back more than 2,000 years is of
Qu Yuan who was a patriotic court official from the State of Chu
during the Warring States. Qu tried to warm the emperor of an
increasingly corrupt government, but failed. In a last protest, he threw
himself into the river and drowned. Hearing of the poet's death, local
people raced out in boats searching for his body. People also jumped
into boats beating the water with their oars throwing rice dumplings
wrapped in reed leaves (zongzi) so that the fish would eat the zongzi
instead of the body. In many places today this festival is celebrated
with dragon boat races and the eating of glutinous rice cakes.

SEPT 13, 2008 Kerry Leung and Kathy Hu Concert
Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Chinese Moon Festival, is one of the most important traditional holidays for the Chinese. Farmers celebrate the end of the summer harvest. Chinese families and friends gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes and pomeloes together. There are many versions of the story of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess, and her flight to the moon.
Come and celebrate the Moon Festival with us with beautiful music from traditional Chinese instruments such as pipa, erhu, guzheng, flutes, and hulusi. Kerry and Kathy will perform selections honoring the Moon, i.e., Moonlight Over the Spring River, Moon on the Han Dynasty and Moon Over the Calm West Lake as well as other selections.
